Discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ community has reached terrifying levels in Turkey. 41 citizens have lost their lives in the last five years. Unfortunately majority of people choose to stay silent about hate crimes because the LGBTIQ+ subject is still a huge taboo.
There was a need to make people question their perceptions and show the absurdity in discriminating people by their sexual orientation.
We placed eight hidden cams at a petshop for three days. Whenever a customer loves and wants to own a turtle, our actor dressed as a salesman informed the customer that the turtle is gay. As soon as they heard the turtle is gay, the majority of the customers gave unexpected reactions and changed their minds about buying the turtle.
It was the first time in history that Turkey discussed the subject of LGBTIQ+ rights in such an open way -even on primetime news-
which used to be a taboo ever before.
